This is a study summary. For full report, see Journal of Clinical Dentistry 2009; 20 (Spec Iss): 123-130
Study goal
To assess whether Colgate® Sensitive Pro-Relief™ toothpaste (test) provides superior relief of tooth sensitivity to a desensitising toothpaste containing potassium ions (control) when brushed twice daily for a period of eight weeks.
Study design and methods
80 adult male subjects with tooth sensitivity used either Colgate® Sensitive Pro-Relief ™ (n=40), or a desensitising toothpaste, Sensodyne Total Care Gentle Whitening (n=40). Subjects brushed their teeth twice a day (morning and evening) for one minute each time. Sensitivity to pressure and to air was measured at one, two, four, and eight weeks.
Results
Colgate® Sensitive Pro-Relief™ reduced tooth sensitivity significantly more effectively than a commercial desensitising toothpaste containing potassium ion, Sensodyne Total Care Gentle Whitening, after two, four, and eight weeks.

Conclusion
Colgate® Sensitive Pro-Relief™ toothpaste provides superior relief of tooth sensitivity, as compared to Sensodyne Total Care Gentle Whitening when brushed twice daily after two, four, and eight weeks.
